The story of the Japan CSO low brass video

In 1991 the Chicago Symphony went on a tour to Japan. Shortly before the tour I was contacted by a former student that a company called Hi Vision of NHK wanted to make a video that would demonstrate a new type of TV transmission called High Definition. They had already recorded videos with a string quartet and a piano recital. These videos were to be shown in public places in Japan on newly developed High Definition tv sets. The company hired one of the most well known directors in Japan to direct the session in a concert hall in Tokyo.

As it turned out, the director was more interested in artistic gimmicks with the video production and as a result most of the takes were only a onetime through affair while the production team endlessly played with video effects.

Many years later after trying to get a copy of the original from NHK who said it was lost, I tried to reassemble a copy of the finished video from a poor quality copy I had and a decent analog audio tape. I had a local video company put together as good as possible the two substandard pieces and this is what we were able to salvage. It is a less than adequate representation of a historical event but hopefully worth the reincarnation.
