Friedman plays a Bach Stradivarius tenor trombone with a Jay Friedman model LT42GT50 thin gold brass bell, improved Thayer valve and .562 50LW slide. This instrument was built to replicate his 1959 Mt. Vernon Bach 42.

His alto trombone is a 1966 Latzsch.

Jay Friedman uses a custom mouthpiece made by Bob Reeves. It has the rim of a 3G, but a uniquely shaped cup and a smaller backbore.

Friedman has also worked with Max and Heinrich Thein to replicate an old German Kruspe trombone. He uses this replica when it is historically appropriate for the repertoire.
